Son of Ogasawara Hidemasa, his mother an adopted daughter of Hidetada. He saw his first battle at Osaka and, by way of Akashi in Harima, was transferred in 1632 to Bizen Kokura (150,000 koku) where he served as the shogunate's trusted bulwark in northern Kyushu.
