Ippen traveled throughout Japan distributing nenbutsu amulets and spreading 'dancing nenbutsu' — teaching that anyone, regardless of status or virtue, could attain salvation by chanting 'Namu Amida Butsu.' He never established a permanent temple, spending his entire life in itinerant preaching. After his death in 1289, his disciple Ta-a Shinkyo founded a training hall in Fujisawa, which became Yugyoji (Shojoko-ji). The National Treasure 'Ippen Hijiri-e' picture scrolls depicting his travels are masterpieces of Japanese art.
