Toyotomi Hidetsugu and Mt. Koya: A Nephew Destroyed by Power

Yamato Koriyama Castle was entrusted by Toyotomi Hideyoshi to his half-brother Hidenaga, who ruled a 1,000,000-koku domain spanning Yamato, Kii, and Izumi provinces. Known for his mild temperament, Hidenaga served as a mediator among daimyo and was called the "Yamato Dainagon." The castle became a crucial stronghold supporting Hideyoshi's regime as he unified the country.

Hidenaga entered the castle in 1585 after being granted a domain of one million koku across Yamato, Kii, and Izumi. As Hideyoshi's right hand, he excelled in domestic affairs and diplomacy, earning the trust of many daimyo. He also developed the castle town and protected temples and shrines. He died of illness at this castle in 1591, aged 52.
