Dairyuji in Watari is the mausoleum of the Watari Date clan, founded by Date Shigezane, Masamune's cousin and famed warrior. The clan later led the colonization of Hokkaido. Successive graves of the Watari Date lords make it a pilgrimage site for Sengoku history enthusiasts.
Origins
Dairyuji Temple, a Soto-shu Zen temple, is said to have been established around 1602 when Date Shigezane (1568–1646) was granted the Watari domain following the Battle of Sekigahara. Daiyuji Temple is the family temple of Date Narizumi, Date Masamune's cousin nicknamed "Masamune's demon gauntlet" for his fighting prowess. After Sekigahara, Narizumi received the 18,000-koku domain of Watari within Masamune's Sendai domain and built this temple in 1602. Generations of Watari-Date lords, including Narizumi, are buried here.
