The tutelary shrine of the entire Sugita district, founded in 1063 when Minamoto no Yoriyoshi and his son Yoshiie invited the deity from Iwashimizu Hachimangu. Tradition also holds that Minamoto no Yoritomo stopped here when entering Kamakura. Located in the area known for the Sugita plum grove, the shrine draws visitors during the plum blossom season in spring.

Sugita Hachimangu Nagoshi Oharae
The Nagoshi no Oharae at Sugita Hachimangu in Isogo Ward, Yokohama. Utagawa Hiroshige depicted the Sugita plum grove in his 'One Hundred Famous Views of Edo' series (1856-1858). The Sugita area, where this shrine stands, was famous for over 30,000 plum trees that blossomed in spring, attracting Edo residents on day trips. Hiroshige's woodblock print captured the ethereal beauty of the plum blossoms and helped make Sugita one of the most popular excursion spots from Edo.
