Sosa Tenman-jinja enshrines Sugawara no Michizane (845–903), who rose from scholar to Minister of the Right before being exiled to Dazaifu by political rivals. Deified as Tenjin after his death, his worship spread across Japan. This shrine was reportedly established around 1200 during the Kamakura period as a branch of that faith. Plum trees in the precincts honor his beloved flowers, and votive tablets fill the grounds each exam season.
