Overview
A representative stone-walled castle of Tohoku at the gateway to Oshu, with a beautifully reconstructed wooden three-story turret. Built by Yuki Chikatomo in 1340 and extensively renovated by Niwa Nagashige. The three-story turret was faithfully reconstructed in wood in 1991. Stone walls suffered major collapse in the 2011 earthquake but are being restored with nationwide support.
Origins
First built by Yuki Chikatomo in 1340. Niwa Nagashige entered in 1627 and spent four years converting it into a full stone-walled castle. It produced notable lords including Matsudaira Sadanobu.
