This tutelary shrine of Kita Ward, Sapporo, was founded in 1887 (Meiji 20) as a guardian deity of development when Tondenhei (militia-farmer) settlers established the Shinkotoni settlement. The shrine enshrines Amaterasu Omikami, Toyouke no Kami, and Emperor Jimmu as its principal deities, and has long watched over the pioneering of the northern lands and the growth of the community. Within the precincts, a Meiji-era building that once served as the company headquarters of the Tondenhei battalion has been preserved to this day, and it attracts many school groups and history enthusiasts as a valuable cultural heritage site conveying the history of Hokkaido's pioneering era. It is a historic shrine that embodies the spirit of Hokkaido's settlement period.
