An ancient Suwa shrine said to have been founded in 807 by enshrining a branch deity from Suwa Grand Shrine in Shinshu. Guardian shrine of the Takadanobaba and Waseda area.

According to tradition, Suwa Shrine was founded in 807 (the 2nd year of the Daidō era) when a branch deity was enshrined from Suwa Grand Shrine in Shinano Province, present-day Nagano Prefecture.
