Overview
Shimabara Castle was built by Matsukura Shigemasa. The excessive construction burden and oppressive governance, combined with persecution of Christians, led to the Shimabara Rebellion of 1637. The five-story keep was reconstructed in 1964, and the castle houses a museum of Christian history.

沖田畷の戦い
1584年（天正12年）、肥前国島原（現在の長崎県島原市）の沖田畷において、島津家久率いる島津軍が龍造寺隆信率いる龍造寺軍を大破した戦い。九州の覇権をめぐる両雄の決戦で、龍造寺隆信は島津方の罠にはまり泥沼地帯に誘い込まれて壊滅的打撃を受け、隆信自身も討ち取られた。これにより肥前の雄・龍造寺氏は急速に衰退し、以後は鍋島直茂が実権を握る形で勢力を維持した。島津氏はこの勝利でさらに九州制覇に近づき、大友氏と並ぶ二大勢力との対決へと向かっていった。

In 1638, the 75-year-old Katsunari led troops to suppress the Shimabara Rebellion. Despite needing support from his sons and grandsons to reach the battlefield, his fighting spirit was undiminished. He overruled the siege strategy, ordering an immediate assault that broke the stalemate. After the war, he furiously protested the shogunate's dismissal of the rebels as 'mere peasants,' insisting they were heroes who fought for their beliefs, and retired in disgust.
