In 1598, when Uesugi Kagekatsu was transferred to Aizu, Mizoguchi Hidekazu was granted 60,000 koku at Shibata and began laying out and building Shibata Castle, drawing on the castle-building experience he had gained under Nobunaga and Hideyoshi. Completed under his grandson, third lord Nobunao, the castle remained the seat of the Mizoguchi clan without transfer until the end of the Edo period.
