Overview
A castle uniquely crowned with three shachihoko on its three-story turret—the only such example in Japan. The front gate and corner turret survive as Important Cultural Properties. The turret was reconstructed in wood in 2004 but is inaccessible due to the Self-Defense Forces base on the grounds. Shibata Domain is known as the birthplace of Horibe Yasubei of Chushingura fame.
Origins
Construction began in 1598 when Mizoguchi Hidekazu entered Shibata. The Mizoguchi governed without transfer until the Meiji era. The grounds became an army garrison after Meiji, part remains a GSDF base today. The front gate and corner turret are Important Cultural Properties.
