Mongaku, the monk who performed one hundred days of waterfall austerities here, later played a key role in the founding of the Kamakura shogunate. He visited Yoritomo during his exile in Izu, reportedly showing him the bones of his late father Yoshitomo while urging him to rise against the Taira clan. This encouragement is said to have been one factor that steeled Yoritomo's resolve to take up arms.
