The Sessho-seki legend dates to the late Heian period, with Tamamo-no-Mae, consort of Retired Emperor Toba, identified as the nine-tailed fox incarnation.
Tamamo-no-Mae caused illness in the emperor and was exposed by onmyoji Abe no Yasunari, fleeing to Nasuno-ga-hara.
