Tokugawa Ieyasu
First Shogun of Edo
Tokugawa Ieyasu venerated Sengen Taisha as a thanksgiving for victory at the Battle of Sekigahara and in 1604 sponsored the construction of the present sanctuary buildings. The three structures — main hall, offering hall, and worship hall — follow the distinctive 'Sengen-zukuri' style that Ieyasu personally directed, and the two-story main hall is structurally unique in Japan. His construction produced the building complex that survives today as a National Important Cultural Property, securing the shrine's standing as the center of Mt. Fuji worship.
Minamoto no Yoritomo
First Shogun of Kamakura
Minamoto no Yoritomo visited Sengen Taisha on the occasion of the Fuji-no-makigari hunting ritual (1193) and offered prayers for victory and martial fortune. The grand hunt at the foot of Mt. Fuji was a major ceremony that united the Kanto warrior bands, and Sengen Taisha as its starting point was of central importance. Yoritomo donated estates and positioned Mt. Fuji devotion at the core of the Kamakura shogunate's religious policy.
