A Soto Zen temple founded in 1612 by Tokugawa Ieyasu, world-famous as the burial place of the 47 Ronin. On December 14, 1703, after raiding the Kira residence, Oishi Kuranosuke and his 46 comrades marched about 10km to this temple to present Kira's head at their lord Asano's grave. 由緒
Founded 1612 by Ieyasu in Sotosakurada. Rebuilt in Takanawa by Iemitsu after the 1641 fire. Became the burial site of the 47 Ronin in 1703. Known nationwide as 'the Chushingura temple' ever since.

Sengakuji Ako Gishi-sai
A festival at Sengakuji, where the graves of the 47 Ronin from the Chushingura story are located. A procession with people dressed as the ronin parades through the streets on December 14, the anniversary of their famous raid.

赤穂事件(忠臣蔵)
元禄15年(1703年)12月14日、赤穂浪士47人が本所松坂町の吉良上野介邸に討ち入り、主君・浅野内匠頭の仇を報じた。浪士たちは吉良の首を掲げて泉岳寺の主君の墓前に報告。幕府は義挙と認めつつも切腹を命じ、47士は泉岳寺に葬られた。日本人の忠義観を象徴する物語として今も語り継がれる。

Katsu Kaishū's Naval and Diplomatic Reforms
Katsu Kaishū (1823-1899) was the Edo period's greatest pragmatist, dedicating himself to building Japan's modern navy. He trained at the Nagasaki Naval Training Center in 1855 and captained the Kanrin Maru across the Pacific in 1860. As Sakamoto Ryōma's mentor, he influenced the formation of the Kaientai navy. During the Bakumatsu crisis, he built and trained the shogunal navy before negotiating with Saigō Takamori in 1868 to ensure the bloodless surrender of Edo Castle. He served under the Meiji government as Navy Minister.

慶応4年(1868年)3月13日・14日、旧幕臣・勝海舟と新政府軍参謀・西郷隆盛が高輪の薩摩藩邸で会談し、江戸城の無血明け渡しが決定した。当時100万人を超える世界最大級の都市・江戸を戦火から救った日本史上最大の交渉劇。勝は「江戸の町と民を焼くわけにはいかない」と説き、西郷は「いろいろ難しい議論もありましょうが、私が一身にかけてお引き受けします」と応じた。
