Sakunami Onsen, opened in 1796 along the upper Hirose River, is one of Sendai's two great hot springs alongside Akiu. Ryokan line the mountain gorge. The nearby Nikka Miyagikyo Distillery offers a popular onsen-and-whisky tourist route.
Sakunami Onsen is said to have been opened in 1796 (Kansei 8) by Iwamatu Unai, a physician of the Sendai domain.
