Mutsu Kokubunji Yakushido descends from the 8th-century provincial temple of Mutsu built by Emperor Shomu. The current Yakushi Hall, rebuilt by Date Masamune in 1607, is an Important Cultural Property showcasing Momoyama architecture. Remains of the ancient pagoda and halls surround the temple.
