Nanbu Nobunao, lord of Sannohe Castle, received military support from Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1591 when suppressing a rebellion led by his retainer Kunohe Masazane, part of Hideyoshi's pacification of the Ōshū region. After the revolt was quelled, Nobunao moved his base from Sannohe Castle to Morioka Castle, ending Sannohe's roughly 300-year role as the Nanbu clan's stronghold.
