Sakado Tenmangu was founded around 1700 (Genroku era) to enshrine Sugawara no Michizane, who died in exile at Dazaifu in 903. One of the many Tenmangu shrines established across Japan to venerate his spirit and honor his legacy, it has long served as a guardian of learning for the farming communities along the Koshibe River, with plum trees—beloved by Michizane in life—planted in the precinct.
