According to tradition, Michizane visited Kagami Shrine on Mount Kagami during his forced journey to Dazaifu in 901, after being exiled through the machinations of Fujiwara no Tokihira. The shrine, which overlooks Genkai-nada and the Niji-no-Matsubara pine grove, was originally built to pacify the vengeful spirit of Fujiwara no Hirotsugu—a place Michizane, amid his own grief-stricken travels, reportedly stopped to pray.
