Overview
The castle of the Hizen Saga domain, rebuilt in 1602 (Keicho 7) by Nabeshima Naoshige and his son Katsushige. The main keep's palace (honmaru goten) gate, the Shachi-no-Mon, rebuilt in 1838, survives today and is designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan. Saga Rebellion Site
1874年(明治7年)2月に佐賀県で起きた士族反乱。明治政府の参議・司法卿を辞して帰郷していた江藤新平が、征韓論に賛同する不平士族らに担がれる形で決起した。憂国党・征韓党など数千名の士族が佐賀城を占拠して蜂起したが、明治政府は山縣有朋らを派遣し軍・警察の近代的戦力で2週間余りで鎮圧した。江藤新平は土佐へ脱出して板垣退助に支援を求めたが拒否され、捕縛された後、大久保利通の強い意向により証拠不十分にもかかわらず斬首・梟首(首をさらすこと)に処された。この処刑は「法律家の江藤が法を無視した裁判で処刑された」として後世に批判されることとなった。佐賀の乱は士族反乱の先駆けとして、神風連の乱・秋月の乱・萩の乱へと連なり、最終的に西南戦争への道を開いた。佐賀城本丸歴史館にその経緯が詳しく展示されている。
