Overview
The first of the 88 Shikoku Pilgrimage temples, Ryozenji is known as the 'Temple of Vows' and the 1,400-km circuit's spiritual start. Founded in 729 by Gyoki and established by Kobo Daishi Kukai, it enshrines Shakyamuni Buddha. All pilgrim essentials are sold on site.
Origins
Ryozenji Temple is traditionally said to have been founded in 729 CE by the Buddhist monk Gyoki, who enshrined a statue of Shakyamuni Buddha and constructed a hall on this site.
