At age seven in 1537, Kenshin entered Rinsenji and studied literature, martial arts, and Zen under the abbot Tensitsu Koiku for seven formative years until he departed for Tochio Castle at fourteen. This temple shaped the spiritual character from which his famous devotion to '義' (righteousness) and to Bishamonten would grow. Kenshin's grave is here, and memorial services have been held on his death anniversary without interruption for nearly 450 years.
