Ono Castle is an ancient mountain fortress built in 665 after the defeat at the Battle of Baekgang to defend the Dazaifu government headquarters. Constructed with Baekje engineering, it is considered one of the origins of Japanese castles, with earthen walls and stone fortifications stretching about 8 km around Mount Shioji.

After Japan's crushing defeat at the Battle of Hakusukinoe in 663, Prince Naka no Oe (later Emperor Tenji) ordered the construction of Ono Castle in 665 under the guidance of exiled Baekje engineers, making it the northern anchor of Dazaifu's defenses. Its 8km of earthworks and stone walls around Mt. Shioji still attest to his defense policy.
