Ojima is a small island in Matsushima Bay, historically used as a retreat by Buddhist monks. Cave hermitages known as "Zuiganji Oku-no-in" remain from the Heian era. The red Togetsu Bridge connects it to the mainland, and Basho mentioned it in Oku no Hosomichi.
