In 1587, during Hideyoshi's Kyushu Campaign, the Christian daimyo Otomo Sorin sought an audience with Hideyoshi to plead for the protection of Christianity. On his return journey, however, Sorin fell ill and died here in Tsukumi at the age of 57. Hideyoshi's drive to unify Japan spurred Sorin's final act, making this site his place of death. The tomb bears both a Christian cross and a Buddhist memorial stone.
