Ogaki Castle, built around 1535 in Gifu Prefecture, served as a key Western Army stronghold during the 1600 Battle of Sekigahara, functioning as Ishida Mitsunari's headquarters. The current four-story keep was reconstructed in 1959. Ogaki is also celebrated as the city where Matsuo Basho concluded his famous journey 'Oku no Hosomichi.'

Origins

Built around 1535 (Tenbun 4). During the Battle of Sekigahara, the castle served as a key stronghold for the Western Army. After the battle, the Toda clan entered the domain and served as lords of Ogaki Domain throughout the Edo period.

Ogaki Castle served as the headquarters of the Western Army led by Ishida Mitsunari during the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600. Mitsunari based his forces here to confront the Eastern Army, and even after the decisive battle shifted to Sekigahara, the castle withstood attacks from the Tokugawa side and only surrendered after the Western Army's defeat there.

9:00 AM–5:00 PM (last admission 4:30 PM). Closed Tuesdays (following day if a holiday), the day after a holiday, and Dec 29–Jan 3.

Adults ¥200 (combined ticket with Ogaki Local History Museum), groups (10+) ¥100. Free for under 18, city residents 65+, and disability-certificate holders with caregivers.
