The Aizu Domain school founded in 1803 under lord Matsudaira Katanobu and chief retainer Tanaka Haruhito. With 1,000 students on an 8,000-tsubo campus, it taught Confucian studies, medicine, astronomy, swimming, and martial arts. The Byakkotai boys studied here. Destroyed in the Boshin War and faithfully reconstructed in 1987, including classrooms, training halls, and an astronomical observatory.
The Nisshinkan was founded in 1803 (Kowa 3) as the official domain school of the Aizu clan, established through the initiative of chief retainer Tanaka Haruhito under the fifth domain lord Matsudaira Katanobu.
