Namegata Tenmangu was founded during the Genroku era (1688–1704) to enshrine Sugawara no Michizane as the god of learning. The intricate plum blossom carvings adorning the shrine hall pay tribute to his celebrated farewell poem—composed before his exile to Dazaifu—and his renowned devotion to plum trees. Perched on the Namegata plateau between Lake Kasumigaura and Lake Kitaura, it has long watched over the academic aspirations of local students.
