Overview
A Shingon temple known as the 33rd and final station of the Bando 33 Kannon Pilgrimage.
Said to have been founded in 717 when Gyoki Bosatsu carved and enshrined a Senju Kannon.
As the final station of the Bando pilgrimage, it is a holy site where pilgrims offer prayers of gratitude upon completion.
Temple buildings stand on the hillside of Mt. Nago with a wonderful view overlooking Tateyama Bay.

Minamoto no Yoritomo

After his defeat at the Battle of Ishibashiyama (1180), Minamoto no Yoritomo fled to Awa Province. According to temple tradition, he prayed before the Thousand-Armed Kannon at Nago-ji for a miraculous comeback. His prayers were answered: he rallied the warriors of the eastern provinces and went on to found the Kamakura shogunate.
