A Shingon temple known as the 33rd and final station of the Bando 33 Kannon Pilgrimage. Said to have been founded in 717 when Gyoki Bosatsu carved and enshrined a Senju Kannon. Wooden seated Thousand-Armed Kannon by Tankei (Sanjūsangendō, Kyoto, National Treasure, Kamakura period)
Senju Kannon (Thousand-Armed Kannon): rescues all beings through a thousand methods, with a thousand hands and a thousand eyes. Usually represented with 42 arms standing for the full thousand — an expression of boundless compassion.

Minamoto no Yoritomo

After his defeat at the Battle of Ishibashiyama (1180), Minamoto no Yoritomo fled to Awa Province. According to temple tradition, he prayed before the Thousand-Armed Kannon at Nago-ji for a miraculous comeback. His prayers were answered: he rallied the warriors of the eastern provinces and went on to found the Kamakura shogunate.
