One of the three Tenmangu shrines in Japan enshrining a self-carved statue of Sugawara no Michizane. Tradition holds he carved this image in 901 during his exile. Revered for blessings of scholarship.

The origins of Nagatani Tenmangu are said to date to 901 CE (the first year of the Engi era), when Sugawara no Michizane, stripped of his post as Minister of the Right due to false accusations by Fujiwara no Tokihira, is said to have stopped at this site while on his way into exile in Dazaifu.
