According to tradition, Michizane stopped here in 901 while being escorted into exile at Dazaifu. He carved a wooden image of himself and enshrined it at this very spot — an act that gave the shrine its extraordinary distinction. That self-carved statue remains the principal object of worship, placing Nagatani Tenmangu among the celebrated "Three Body Tenjin Shrines of Japan."
