A memorial museum dedicated to Edo-period kokugaku scholar Motoori Norinaga, preserving his former residence Suzunoya. Norinaga spent 35 years completing the Kojiki-den, a monumental commentary on Japan's oldest chronicle. Suzunoya was relocated to the Matsusaka Castle grounds, and his second-floor study still displays the namesake bells hanging from a pillar.
Motoori Norinaga was born in 1730 in Matsusaka, Ise Province, into a cotton merchant family. From an early age he showed a keen interest in scholarship, and in 1752 he traveled to Kyoto to study medicine while also receiving guidance in classical studies from Hori Keizan, a scholar in the tradition …
