Overview
One of Japan's Three Great Castles, Kumamoto Castle (1607) was built by Kato Kiyomasa. Its curved 'Musha-gaeshi' stone walls are the finest in Japanese castle history. It withstood a siege in the 1877 Satsuma Rebellion. Severely damaged in the 2016 earthquake, ongoing restoration makes it a symbol of Kumamoto's recovery.
