Minamoto no Yorimasa, enshrined here, took up arms in 1180 under Prince Mochihito's decree against the Taira regime led by Taira no Kiyomori, then at the height of his power as Chancellor. Though Yorimasa was killed at Uji, his revolt sparked risings by Minamoto forces nationwide and, after Kiyomori died the next year, set in motion the Genpei War that ultimately destroyed the Taira clan.
