Overview
Renowned as the stronghold of Oda Nobunaga, originally built in 1405 as the Owari provincial headquarters. Nobunaga used it for about twelve years, launching the Battle of Okehazama (1560) from here. After the Honnoji Incident (1582), Toyotomi Hideyoshi convened the historic Kiyosu Conference here to determine Nobunaga's succession. The reconstructed tower (1989) stands along the Gojo River.

Kiyosu Castle was founded in 1405 by Shiba Yoshishige as the headquarters of the Owari provincial governor. On June 27, 1582, after crushing Akechi Mitsuhide at Yamazaki, Hideyoshi convened the Kiyosu Conference with Shibata Katsuie, Niwa Nagahide, and Ikeda Tsuneoki. By championing Nobunaga's infant grandson Sanposhi as heir while securing vast territorial gains for himself, Hideyoshi effectively seized the Oda political succession.

Nobunaga used Kiyosu as his base from 1555, launching the decisive Okehazama sortie in 1560. For the decade of Owari consolidation and the Mino campaign, Kiyosu was the command center from which his ambition for national unification took shape.

At the Kiyosu Conference, Katsuie backed Nobunaga's third son Nobukatsu but was outmaneuvered by Hideyoshi's faster political moves. His loss of initiative at Kiyosu led directly to his defeat at the Battle of Shizugatake in 1583, ending any Katsuie bid for power.
