In 1585, as Hideyoshi was appointed Kanpaku and tightened his grip over the Kinai region, Okabe Norisuna — a retainer of Hideyoshi's younger brother Hidenaga — was installed as lord of Kishiwada Castle, bringing the stronghold under Toyotomi control. The Okabe clan held the lordship through the Edo period, laying the foundation of Kishiwada's castle town.
