Origins
The founding date is unknown, but a divided spirit of Sugawara no Michizane is said to have been invited from Sanuki in the late Heian period. Michizane served as Governor of Sanuki Province (present-day Kagawa), and this shrine traces its founding to a tradition of enshrining his spirit, invited from Sanuki after his deification. The name "Sanuki Tenjinja" reflects that origin. Established in the late Heian period, it brought Tenjin worship to the Kazusa region of the Boso Peninsula.
