Kimii-dera, the second temple of the Saigoku Kannon Pilgrimage, is the head temple of the Kuse Kannon sect, perched on the middle slope of Mt. Nagusa in Wakayama City. During the Azuchi-Momoyama period, Kuwayama Shigeharu—a close retainer of Toyotomi Hideyoshi—donated funds to build the multi-story pagoda (tahoto) at Kimiidera. Entrusted by Hideyoshi to govern Kii Province, Kuwayama's patronage supported the temple's development. The pagoda survives today as an Important Cultural Property, bearing witness to the Toyotomi clan's ties with this sacred site.
