Kazo Tenjin Shrine enshrines Sugawara no Michizane as its principal deity. Though banished to Dazaifu, Michizane never abandoned his devotion to learning, and after his death he was venerated across Japan as the god of scholarship. Founded around 1650, the shrine gathered deep reverence alongside the Edo-period terakoya school culture. Plum trees in the precincts echo his famous poem composed at the moment of exile.
