Origins
Built in 1605 (Keicho 10) by Kanamori Shigemasa. The castle was abandoned in the early Edo period, but the surviving stone wall ruins convey the castle culture of the Hida region.

Masushima Castle was one of the strongholds of the Kanamori clan, who unified Hida Province under orders from Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Kanamori Nagachika built Takayama Castle to govern Hida on Hideyoshi's command, and his grandson Kanamori Yoshishige built Masushima Castle in Hida-Furukawa as its satellite fortress in 1605, reflecting how Hideyoshi's unification policy took root in regional rule.
