Kainan Shrine enshrines Sugawara no Michizane alongside Susanoo. After Michizane died in exile at Dazaifu in 903, a series of disasters—fires, epidemics, and noble deaths—struck Kyoto, prompting the court to deify him as Tenjin. By the shrine's founding in 982, his divine veneration had spread across Japan, taking root at this guardian shrine of the Miura Peninsula.
