The grand annual festival at Kainan Jinja, the chief guardian shrine of Misaki in Miura city. This sea deity festival in the fishing town of Misaki features mikoshi processions through the port town and lively dedicated performances. Kainan Shrine enshrines Sugawara no Michizane alongside Susanoo. After Michizane died in exile at Dazaifu in 903, a series of disasters—fires, epidemics, and noble deaths—struck Kyoto, prompting the court to deify him as Tenjin. By the shrine's founding in 982, his divine veneration had spread across Japan, taking root at this guardian shrine of the Miura Peninsula.
