After the Battle of Sekigahara (1600), Shimazu Yoshihiro retired to Kajiki. His retreat from Sekigahara — the legendary 'Shimazu withdrawal' in which he cut through the heart of Tokugawa Ieyasu's army with a small band of men — is one of the most celebrated episodes of the battle. In his later years at Kajiki he devoted himself to domain governance and cultural pursuits, beloved by his people as a warrior equally accomplished in literary arts. He died at the age of 85 in 1611.
