Emperor Sutoku Mausoleum

The mausoleum of Emperor Sutoku, exiled to Sanuki after the Hogen Rebellion (1156); feared as one of Japan's three great vengeful spirits, the poet Saigyo came here to compose consoling verses, and the site is administered by the Imperial Household Agency to this day.

Emperor Sutoku's Mausoleum (Shiramine Misasagi) in Sakaide honors the 75th emperor exiled to Sanuki after losing the Hogen Rebellion (1156). Feared as one of Japan's three great vengeful spirits, his mausoleum is managed by the Imperial Household Agency. Poet Saigyo visited to console his spirit, composing famous verses. Usually visited together with Shiromineji.

Origins

Emperor Sutoku (1119–1164), the 75th emperor of Japan, was exiled to Sanuki Province (present-day Kagawa Prefecture) after his defeat in the Hogen Rebellion of 1156.
