Suda Tenmangu, founded around 1200 during the Kennin era of the Kamakura period, enshrines Sugawara no Michizane as its deity. After Michizane died in exile at Dazaifu in 903, he was venerated as Tenjin across Japan, and the farming communities at the foot of Mount Oyama revered him as the god of learning. The plum trees in the precinct evoke his farewell poem—"If the east wind blows, send your fragrance, plum blossoms"—and have been tended as his enduring symbol.
