Iga Ueno Castle in Mie Prefecture was built by Tsutsui Sadatsugu in 1585 and later remodeled by master castle-builder Todo Takatora. The towering stone walls exceeding 30 meters are among Japan's finest and a National Historic Site. The current three-story keep was privately reconstructed in wood in 1935. Located in Matsuo Basho's hometown, the area blends castle history with haiku culture.
