This Tenmangu shrine, founded around the year 1000 as a subsidiary of Kashikata Hachimangū, enshrines Sugawara no Michizane as the patron deity of learning. After Michizane died in exile at Dazaifu in 903, he was venerated as a god of scholarship across Japan. The plum trees in the precinct evoke his celebrated farewell poem "Kochi fukaba," composed upon leaving Kyoto for exile.
