A temple of the Shotoku sect said to have been built by Prince Yamashiro no Oe in accordance with the dying wishes of Prince Shotoku in 622 (Suiko 30). Its three-story pagoda, constructed in 706 (Keiun 3), is the oldest three-story pagoda in Japan and is designated a National Treasure, a treasure of Asuka-period architecture on a par with the five-story pagoda of Horyuji.
