The 43rd temple on the Shikoku Eighty-Eight Temple Pilgrimage. An ancient temple enshrining a Thousand-Armed Kannon (Senju Kanzeon Bosatsu) as its principal object of worship. According to tradition it was founded around 540, during the reign of Emperor Kinmei, and was later revived by Kobo Daishi, who carved the thousand-armed Kannon. Origins
An ancient temple traditionally said to have been founded during the reign of Emperor Kinmei in the 6th century. Kobo Daishi later revived the temple, carving an image of the Thousand-armed Kannon. The great zelkova tree standing in the precincts is designated a natural monument of Ehime Prefecture.
