Gassan Shrine stands at the summit of Mt. Gassan (1,984 m), the central peak of the Dewa Sanzan, enshrining the moon deity Tsukuyomi. One of the high-ranked shrines listed in the Engishiki, it served as the first-rank shrine of Dewa Province. Accessible only from July to September.

According to tradition, Mt. Gassan was opened in 593 CE by Prince Hachiko, a cousin of Prince Shotoku, who enshrined the moon deity Tsukuyomi at the summit, establishing the origin of Gassan Shrine.
