Overview
Fukuyama Castle was built by Mizuno Katsunari as the seat of the Fukuyama domain. Known as the castle closest to a Shinkansen station, its distinctive iron-plated north face is unique among Japanese castles. A major renovation in 2022 commemorating its 400th anniversary restored the iron plating.
Origins
Built in 1622 by Mizuno Katsunari to defend western Japan for the Tokugawa shogunate. The iron plates on the north face of the keep were designed to protect against gunfire. The Abe clan served as lords until the end of the Edo period. The keep was destroyed in 1945 air raids and rebuilt in 1966.
